Famous for its spectacular lava lake, Erta Ale (‘the mountain that smokes’), offers one of the rarest and most fascinating volcanic phenomena: a lake of magma that pours from the bowels of the earth glowing in a large, deep crater-basin. The Plain of Salt is a large closed basin of northern Danakil, including the territory of Ethiopia which borders with Eritrea. The significant salt deposits are being exploited by the local populations.
