One of the most difficult clichés to dispel about Down syndrome is linked to the image of being happy because you are not aware of having a disability. It’s not like that at all. The stories of Martina, Chiara, Simone, Fatima, Marina and Elisabetta demonstrate this to us and remind us that we cannot let a part of us, however significant, define who we are and what we can do. Their stories are an example of lives full of autonomy and choices, desires and dreams, which in their simplicity have a lot to teach. Embracing diversity allows everyone to be freer, unfortunately there are still many prejudices and stereotypes to be deconstructed. Being able to express themselves beyond words, through dance, sport, relationships and work, allows them to acquire the self-esteem and confidence necessary to live a full life.
